JUNE HEATWAVE: €6.3 BILLION IN PRODUCTIVITY LOSSES IN GERMANY

The Prognos institute, for business daily Handelsblatt, puts the cost of the 17–30 June 2026 heatwave to the German economy at €6.3 billion — productivity losses (97% of the total), sick leave and work accidents. One day above 30°C costs €431 million; above 35°C, nearly €984 million. Experts anticipate 3 to 4 comparable episodes per year, i.e. more than €20 billion annually.
